10 Summer Reading Books

In the summer months, educators worry about academic backsliding, yet children want to do anything but "work." That's why we love summer reading. Books can and should be a pleasure year-round. What's special about summer reading is that children can enjoy the pleasures of reading with more autonomy, having a bigger say in the what, where and when. As children prepare to move on to higher grades and take on chapter books, summer reading can also offer them an opportunity to become familiar with more advanced reading, in a manageable form, growing their confidence as they enter a new school year. Early readers come in the shape of a chapter book and may even be chaptered inside, yet they are still heavily illustrated, with simple text. Early chapter books further the transition, with more text and still some illustrations. This selection offers 7 Early Readers and 3 Early Chapter books for readers first to second grade.
