Saving American Beach: The Biography of African American Environmentalist MaVynee Betsch

In a time when Jim Crow laws made it impossible for MaVynee Betsch to visit most beaches because of her skin color; her grandfather opened American Beach, a paradise that was open to everyone. As time passed and change came, there was no longer a need for such a beach, and it fell into disrepair. MaVynee would return to American Beach many years later, after making a name for herself as an acclaimed opera singer, only now to act as a caretaker and conservationist. She would bring the land back to is former beauty and defend it from development until her last days.
