It was the 1940s in segregated New York City. 

Whether you danced in a hall to trumpets and saxophones in an Italian neighborhood or on the street to maracas and congas in a Puerto Rican neighborhood, you usually danced where you lived and with the people who shared your origins. But before the decade was out, a new dance hall - the Palladium - welcomed people from all neighborhoods. When Millie Donay and Pedro Aguilar met on the Palladium's dance floor, sparks flew and barriers fell.
