Born in 1851 to an enslaved father and free mother, Charles Albert Tidley taught himself to read and worked as a bricklayer before composing some of the most compelling gospel hymns of the 20th century. Known as the "people's pastor" he founded a soup kitchen and a clothing ministry are still in operation today. Ages: preschool to early school age.
